Books for Breakfast meets on the 3rd Tuesday every month at 9:30 am.
In {month} 2025 we will discuss The Women by Kristin Hannah - Early in 1914's Great War, women were hired at the arsenals where they worked grueling shifts (often seven days a week) handling TNT and other explosives with little protective gear. 19 year old April joins her friend Marjorie taking a job filling shells in the Danger Building: difficult, dangerous, and absolutely essential work. They are joined by Lucy Dempsey, wife of Daniel Dempsey, an Olympic gold medalist and star forward of Tottenham Hotspur (a professional soccer team). When her coworkers learn she is a footballer's wife, she's invited to join the arsenal ladies' football club, the Thornshire Canaries. The Canaries soon acquire an unexpected fan in the boss's wife, Helen Purcell, who is concerned by reports that Danger Building workers suffer from serious, unexplained illnesses. One common symptom, the lurid yellow hue of their skin, earns them the nickname "Canary Girls." As the war grinds on and tragedy takes its toll, the Canary Girls persist despite the dangers, proud to serve, determined to outlive the war and rejoice in victory and peace.
For people who attend the group regularly, a hold will be placed for you each month in time for the next month's book to arrive by our meeting date. If you are not a regular attender, please place a hold yourself or contact the library to place a hold for you.
